Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) have received wide attention due to their cost-effectiveness and high safety features. However, parasitic reactions and undesirable dendrite growth hamper their practical application.Herein, we propose an non-toxic electrolyte additive of adenosine (ADO) into the base ZnSO4 electrolyte to address the aforementioned challenges through the synergistic effect of the multi-site (ribose, purine and amino). The ribose and amino groups of ADO can combine with Zn2+ to alter [Zn(H2O)6] 2+ and reduce the activity of the H2O molecule, thus inhibiting H2O-induced HER and corrosion. Moreover, the purine group of ADO tends to tightly adsorb onto the Zn surface and provide abundant zincophilic sites, which accelerates the ion transfer kinetics and the desolvation process of Zn2+. In addition, the ribose and amino groups also show strong adsorption energies to Zn (002) plane, which can guide an oriented and lateral deposition of Zn along (002) plane and restrain the Zn dendrite formation. Consequently, the ADO-added electrolyte endows a stable elec trochemical cycle in Zn//Zn batteries over 2650 h at 1 mA cm − 2 and 1 mA h cm − 2. The Zn//I2 full batteries also demonstrate exceptional rate capability and cycle stability.
